External USB HD "disappears" OS 10.4.11

I am running OS 10.4.11 on a 15” PowerBook 1.67 GHz PPC G4 (1.5), 512 KB memory

For several years I have had a Passport External 320GB USB (named PASSPORT) drive which holds all of my data & music files. Never have had an issue with the Passport. The 80GB internal drive on the PowerBook holds my operating/boot system as well as all of my applications.

It has been so long since I bought the 320GB drive that I can’t remember if I re-formatted it to Mac HFS before starting to use it.

Recently the Passport has become unmountable on the desktop.

The Passport is running (drive spinning), the access lights on the front show it is being seen by the USB port but it fails to mount on the desktop. (From this site, I even tried the "freezing" in a plastic bag)

I have searched this site with as many possible keywords that I can think of - nothing seems to mirror this particular problem.

Disk Utility can see the drive, it lists both the Passport internal drive specs (298+/- GB, brand name) and below that, the name of the drive, PASSPORT – the latter being grayed out.

I can run “Repair Disk” on the “298+/-GB element, but the “repair” fails giving me an error. When I highlight PASSPORT, the mount button is active, but the drive does not mount.

I have run DISKWARRIOR 4.1 on the drive, DK 4.1 doesn’t do anything saying the drive is FAT32.

Would connecting the drive to a Windows machine (yuk!) allow me to mount the drive and recovery the data on the drive?

I plan on buying another external drive, 1TB, and ensuring I format it to HFS before using it. Any suggestions on moving the approximately 100GB on the 320GB PASSPORT to the 1TB?

Appreciate any ideas, suggestions
