FaceTime resetting mic input level

Hi. I'm new to using FaceTime on my Mac, only used it on my iPhone before, so I think I just might be missing something here.

I have a Mac Mini, using a MacAlly IceCam 2, USB, built in Mic. The mic shows up under system preferences, and I can adjust it, but when I connect to a FaceTime call, it resents the USB input level to 0, effectively muting it, and one has to go back into system preferences every time a new FaceTime call is initiated to turn it back on. I think it might be trying to use 'Line In' for FaceTime initially instead of the USB mic. In FaceTime the USB mic is selected under the video menu. Any suggestions to get it to hold the mic level? I assume this isn't normal behaviour as my searches have come up empty..

Thanks!
