Fan Controllers - Good Thing, Bad Thing?

Hello to all,

I sometimes use smcFanController when my MBP gets a bit too hot while using on my lap.

I mentioned this to someone recently and was told that I should stop using the app because it had the potential to take over and mess up the native fan control function of the MBP.

Can anyone advise on their experience of using smcFanController (or any other fan controller) on a Mac?

Thanks

Started using fan controller about a year ago.Just replaced both my cooling fans (1st gen.MBP).I would not use it full time like I did, just when you need it.I've been using a 3 fan laptop cooler and that seems to work better for me.

I use it all the time with various settings as I do a lot of video editing and temp of the power supply can shoot up to 77˚C without fan control..I keep all components at under 55˚C. (imac Quad core i7)

oldman and opacs,

Thanks for the feedback. I try to use the fan control sparingly, so will continue to monitor things and maybe get a laptop cooler.

Happy New Year to you both,

Thanks
