faxing from imac osx

tried to fax from my imac through the print option with no success. is any software needed to be able to fax ?

You do need software to send and receive fax, at least in the 10.2 and previous. But there are plenty of fax softwares out there:

HylaFAX 4.1.2 (freeware)
FaxCenter 1.2.1 build 6
FaxExpress Network 6.5
FAXstf X 10.1.4 (this has been bundled to many macs, e.g. iBooks)
Page Sender 3.0.1

With Panther, you will be able to push a button in the Print dialog to send a page as a fax. I'm not sure how this works with Jaguar (natively at least).

If you're on Cable/DSL/Satellite, you won't be able to fax. You'll need to be on Dial-up.
