Your fax modem sends and receives analog data. I don't know about your digital Road Runner phone--it may use a d2a/a2d converter to connect to regular analog desksets. If your telephone service is digital all the way, then your telephone line cannot work with your modem. Furthermore, you run the risk of damaging the modem if you plug a digital line into it.
