FCP3 3.02 just sort of slows down playback

I had a weird problem the other day - while playing back some video, the audio was chugging away fine, but the video just sort of locked up (on the Mac and the external monitor via a Dazzle) then slowly jerked on like a bad web movie. I have a DP 1 GHz with 768 of RAM, plenty of space on the HD and had no other apps open. It kept happening to me on a variety of clips.

For some odd reason I went into Audio Video settings and changed External video to DVCPRO NTSC from plain old NTSC and that seemed to take care of the problem. I have no idea why. Any help out there would be appreciated.

what was the other codec you used? Couldn't have been a plain NTS, thats just a standard video size and frame rate, not a codec. The DVCPRO is a DV codec which should run flawless at full quality video and audio. If that other codec was the Video codec set for NTSC standards, that would cause that. The data rate is too high to keep up a good video framerate, the audio will play fine.
