I am doing a video of interviews and i found out after i brought in all the footage with one of my audio tracks missing, since it is only interviews i would like to duplicate the audio track i have so the project sounds full during the presentation, this may be simple but i cant figure it out any help would be appreciated

I suspect that you mean that your interviews are in mono, ie one channel (left or right), and you want to duplicate this channel so that you get stereo (left and right).

This is simple to do in FCP:

1. Make sure that you have two sound tracks in your timeline. If not, create another if only one appears. Than Right-Click or Ctrl-Click on the sound track of your movie. You should get a list of option. Then select 'Copy' (See Step1.jpg)

2. Right-Click or Ctrl-Click on the empty sound track. Select 'Paste'. One of two things might happened. FCP will paste into place the duplicate sound in the empty sound track or, it will paste it at the end of sound track 1. If this happeneds, simply click and select it and move the dup in to the other sound track. You should have two sound tracks by now. Make sure that the speakers are selected '1' and '2'. You now have two sound channels, oone playing through the left specker, one through the right. See Step 2 for further info.

Hope it helps.

I should have clarified how i got the video with only one audio track, the firewire port on my camera doesnt work so i had to connect to my Mac with an analog to digital converter, and i foolishly didnt connect one of the channels, so i get both tracks in the timeline both under the audio tab there is no sound i want to copy the sound in the top and put it in the bottom, i also can't select only one audio track in the timeline, i always seem to get both

Dear NB3004,

Thanks for including a screenshot of your problem, now it makes alot of sense.

What has happened is that FCP has imported in stereo, which it does, but you have one channel of sound and one channel of nothing.

I can see from your timeline that your sound is locked together. All you do is unlock the sound channels, delete the 'blank' one and then duplicator as previous discussed in this thread. Once you have the sound channels together, you can relock them, so if you need to move them about, life is a lot simpler.

To unlock sound channels:

1. Select the sound in the timeline. If you have not done so already, you need to unlink the video with the sound. To do this, simply press 'Cmd-L'.

2. Then go to "Modify > Stereo Pair" or press 'Option-L'. This will seperate the sound channels.

Simply as that. Please see screenshot for more help.

Hope this helps...
