We have a first generation XServe running Tiger Server and a bunch of different Macs, mostly running Leopard, some on Tiger.
I've had a few people reporting that they couldn't copy off a file as 'the file was either in use or that they didn't have permission to copy it'
After much testing I dicovered it was if the finder had not yet generated a preview icon and you dragged it off the server to copy then it would give the permissions error, but if you waited a couple of seconds for the preview icon to pop up then it would copy fine.
I'd used workgroup manager to reset the permissions on the share point but it didn't make a difference.
Odd thing is, I try to replicate the problem this morning and I can't. The preview icons seem to be generating much faster than before but I've definately been able to copy a file off successfully before the preview appearred on the server.
