File sharing problems

I'm running 10.4.8 right now, but am having some problems accessing windows shares. The networking is working properly as I am able to get on the internet, and all of the windows machines on the network are able to access the shared folder on the OS X box. However the OS X box can not connect to any of the windows machines, all the windows machines are able to talk and share files amoung them just fine so I know that their networking is setup properly.

If I go into the Finder and click on networking, there is nothing listed in the Servers setion, however the different windows workgroups in the network are listed, and the windows machines are then listed under those workgroups. When I click on connect there it returns "The alias 'XPMachine' could not be opened, because the original item could not be found." Same result if I try to connect via the Connect To Server under Go on the menu bar.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me here? I am at a complete loss here as to why it is not working.

try going into the terminal and type "ping xpmachine", oviously without the quotes. and see if it gets a response.

if you don't get a response then type "ping loopback" and see if you get a response then.
