File sharing

Can anyone help a hopeless amateur in the UK?
I'm trying to share files between my G3 desktop (operating on 9.1) and my ibook (operating on 9.2).
I've connected the 2 via a crossover cable using the ethernet ports and I've turned on appletalk and file sharing on both, but with no success.
Is it possible to link the 2 computers if they're on different operating systems or am i missing somethng really simple?

To my knowledge (and I know that's not saying much. ::ha:: ), the version of the OS shouldn't matter much. Since you're sure that AppleTalk is enabled in the NICs through the AppleTalk control panel and that File Sharing is enabled on both Macs, I won't bring that up. :D

Now, here's my next question: Have you enabled sharing on any folders on any of the Macs? Make sure of this, end then go to the Chooser and select AppleShare and check if something pops up.

Hope this helps... :)

does ping work? Did you apply any individual ips in the same subnet to those machines or are they desperately searching for a dhcp-server? I know, this has nothing to do with Appletalk, but this way you can figure out, if the connection is physically ok. Might be that the cable is damaged..
And welcome to the forum! :)

you might not even need the crossover cable depeding on the age of your ibook it may have autoswitching NIC where it will switch its transmit/recieve pairs

I would recommend buying an inexpensive 2-port router (look on Pricewatch) and connecting both computers to it, then connecting the router to your broadband or dial-up modem. This is the setup we have here, and File Sharing works fine. You need to turn it on for both computers, of course, and you might need to know the other computer's local IP address, but this is easy to determine by logging in to your router and gathering the appropriate information.

You can do this with the crossover cable but you have to go through some gymnastics with the OS 9 system to make them talk to each other (OS X automatically searches for connected systems!)

Make sure you have file and program sharing turned on for both computers (I like having everything on then I know that I am not restricting any access.)

Then you need to set up users on both computers and set the passwords for "password" so you don't get confused; or just leave the password section blank. Once you set up those users you can go to the chooser on one computer and the other computer should show up in the network list (the one icon that isn't a printer in the chooser, "Apple Share."

Once you select the other computer and enter whatever password you set for that computer, a disk drive icon should show up on your desktop.

Let us know if this works for you.
