Files greyed out?

I've had this problem in several applications including Word and BBedit...

trying to open a file from the File --> Open dialog shows my files, but some of them are grayed out. I know this is neither a unix permission nor a finder locked file issues.

It seems to happen more with files downloaded or sent as email attachements. I don't think this is a file type/creator issue because the files show the correct icons.

If I simply drag the file onto the program icon in the Dock it works fine.

Why is this happening? Why can't I access these files from the Open dialog?

It happened once to me. I was using QuickTime Player to open a DivX movie and it was grayed out in the open panel. The file had a really big name. Much more characters than the 31 allowed for classic and carbon apps. Maybe this is the cause of the problem. I don't know... just guessing...
