I just upgraded from OS 9 to Panther...and one of the features I really liked was the new format of the Finder screen that I accessed by opening the hard drive. It was convenient to be able to only have that screen open and use the arrows to go back and forward, without any new windows popping up when folders were opened...but somehow the preferences were changed, and I now longer have that feature. Instead, it opens like as the old hard drive would, and I can't get that convenient window unless I go to File - New Finder Window. How do I change the preferences so it opens to the Panther Finder Window every time?

Also, does anyone notice Internet Explorer crashing much more than usual on Panther? It didn't crash half as much before I upgraded. Is this Microsoft's problem?

If you look in the Finder Application Menu (the one next to the Apple Menu on the left in the menu bar), you will see the Finder Prefs. If you open that and look in "General", you can specify what to display when you open a new Finder window – Home, Computer, etc.

You can use this Prefs panel to change other display options in Finder too. You can also change the options window by window by pressing [Cmd] + [J] to change the prefs for that window or all windows.

As for Internet Explorer –*no I haven't noticed it crashing, but that's because it is a piece of MS {expletive deleted}, and it's rubbish compared with Safari, which is the greatest browser on the planet! :D
 
There's a white "bar" on the right side of the Finder windows. If you click that it'll hide all the top buttons and the side nav bar. You might have clicked that. Hiding all the icons at the top also makes it act like the Finder in OS 9.

IE in OS X really sucks and is slow. I don't think it's been updated since OS X first included it.

Safari is my favorite browser but there are also a lot of other browsers much better than IE. Search this site for Opera, Firefox, Camino, Shira and maybe more that I can't think of.
