Firewire 800?

I'm looking to buy a firewire 800 pci card, will I need to buy any special firewire 800 cable or will a normal firewire cable transfer 800mps?

Do you have a FireWire 800 drive? Wouldn't it have come with a cable?
Or is this to transfer between a G5 and a non-FireWire 800 machine... which begs the question - wouldn't ethernet be faster?

I am wondering if it makes any sense to have one drive plugged to a firewire 800. Even 400mbit are more than most of the drives can transfer..

The 8x DVD writer I have will only write at 2.5x times max at the moment, thats why I was upgrading the firewire card

on a unrelated question: does a usb 2.0 pc card work with a pbook g4? or even a firewire pc card, if such exists

I once plugged a usb 2.0 card bus to my tibook and it worked without any drivers. However, I didn't see any huge improvement in speed. A usb2.0 disk was plugged.. And there are firewire pc cards available.

cool, im looking to buy a extra firewire/usb drive for my pbook, and need another firewire port

Nah this one is a Lacie D2 8x but at the moment I can only write at like 2.5x cos I need a Firewire 800 card cos at the moment I've only got Firewire 400

Well, 2.5x would need max 2mb/sec. 8x would be at <10mb/sec. Firewire 400 makes max. 50mb/sec. I don't think your problem lies on firewire 400 but maybe on your media or your slow harddisc/system.
