Firewire Drive Will Not Mount

I have a Firewire /USB drive that has gotten progressively more difficult to mount. Finally today it refused to mount at all in either Firewire or USB mode. The drive seems to be receiving power but will not mount on the desktop.
Any suggestions at troubleshooting would be appreciated.
Thanks.

One suggestion: use another useraccount (if you don'T have then temporally add one) and test, if mounting the drive causes you problems as well. Also repair permissions. Good luck

I logged in as root and it did work. Thanks.
One glitch, I was totally unable to create a new account from either my account or root. Any suggestions?
I did repair permissions before I did any of the above.

I have a similar problem, only my drive won't even show up on the system. I whirs and the light goes on, but doesn't read in Disk Utility.

I suppose you are on panther (10.3.x). Did you upgrade your system to 10.3 instead of a fresh installation? Something seems to be messed up with your os. Did you repair the permissions few times?

did you try the same thing as I proposed to latrapeze?

Never mind, today I unplugged it and plugged it in. After a few times it came on, but now I'm not trusting any important data to it.
