Flash based harddisk?

Hello everybody,

With apple securing so much flash memory it does make you think that they are going to use it in more than just iPods ... could ultraportable powerbooks that use flash harddisks be round the corner?

Does anybody know about the technical details of harddisk storage vs. flash storage. How many times can flash write and read before coming broken? Is it much faster than magnetic storage?

i was under the impression that comapred to hard drives, flash is fast, robust, drop-proof and small (in form factor) and quiet (silent) but hideously expensive.

Flash Hard Drives, i think, were meant to replace traditional ones years ago, but then traditional HDD got much bigger and cheaper very quickly, so people forgot about flash. now with the nano etc, flash hdds have a chance to become big again.

i'd love an 80gb flash disk in my mac. silence! no thrashing harddisks! (just a question, if hard drives were flash, i mean all the memory was flash, would there need to be a distinction between RAM and Storage? is there a difference, really, or are hardrives just too slow for RAM, and flash to small for mass storage?)
