Font Book corrupted? Fonts won't work, greyed out. Help!

Okay, something is very wrong. A lot of fonts disappeared from my Font Book even though they are in the library. I can't add fonts. I'll go into my folders and more than half of them are greyed out. What does that mean? All of the fonts (which are very few) that are in the Font Book do work, but again, there are hardly any. I've zapped my PRAM, rebuilt my desktop, updated to 10.3.5.

Also, everything is moving at an incredibly slow speed. So I don't think it's just a font issue. There's something else going on here.

Any ideas? I'm just about to format and reinstall OS X.

AHHGG!! Thanks in advance.. I appreciate any and all help.

You could throw out your font book .plist Just an idea. Or run activity viewer to see which program is hogging the CPU.

Have you repaired your permissions yet? You can start the easy way, Apps/Utilities/Disk Utility/Repair Permissions or you can reboot with your start up cd and do a full permissions repair (DON'T REINSTALL YOUR OS X, just go to the file menu to "Repair Permissions").
