font typefaces in X

As of MacOSX text apps seem to be unable to emulate typefaces (such as italic or bold) that are missing in a given font. Classic used QuickDraw for that purpose. With Quartz, we lost that ability.
Does anybody know of a way to create the missing typefaces for a font (without having to design it from scratch). ?
Any help greatly appreciated.

It's wanted by OS X that you can't emulate them. When you bring a job to press, you can't emulate QuickDraw on a commercial printer. OS X is using the Adobe PostScript architecture for its fonts, so no more QuickDraw typefaces. Good riddance, I'd say.

If you need some faces, buy them could be my piece of advice.
