Fonts all over the place!

I like my fonts. The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned!

Question is, where is the best place to put new fonts when running 10.2.8?

So far, on my HD, I have found fonts in the following places:

HD/Library/Fonts (most extensive directory on the HD)
HD/System/Library/Fonts (a few commonly used ones)
HD/System Folder/Fonts (a few more commonly used ones)

I would like to consolidate all the fonts into one folder and organise them, deleting some of the ones I don't like. Is this possible? Or do I need to leave them where they are?

If I do consolidate them, which folder shall I put all the fonts into?

Oh, and one more question (sorry). When I use Finder to search for all *.ttf types, it brings up nothing. Nada. Is there an explanation for this?

Put in User/Library/Fonts

Don't do that, just add to your User Fonts folder.
