Fonts in X11

From reviewing previous posts, I see that it is not practical to use my OSX fonts in X11. OK, so my question is where do I get fonts and how do I install them? I see nothing in Fink regarding font files. I don't need professional foundry fonts, but I need a fair bit more that the few installed with OOo and The GIMP.
