My friend gave me a number of font files in ttf format. Is there anyway to get them working in X.1.5?

TrueType fonts (Mac or PC versions) are natively supported on OS X (including 10.1.x).
(It doesn't matter if they are intended for a PC or not. They should work on your system. Just put them in /Library/Fonts or /User/Library/Fonts and launch the application you want to use them in.)
