Hello,

I was having some major lock up issues with my G4 running Tiger. I decided to a Archive/ install. Well when it came up it asked for username and password. Well having used my password all time for transferring files or upgrades downloads whatever I know I have it write. But since the username never comes up when it asks for a password prompt I'm thinking that has to be my issue because I keep getting the vibrating screen everytime I punck both in. Anyway to get around the username if I have my password? Other then loosing everything and re-installing tiger form scratcyh?

Hi Steve
I had the same problem on a G5 last week I puchaised and wanted to change user account from the previus owner i then rung him and asked if he would give me the pass word was no problem (Monkey) but the same time he asked me the G5 that is what is the user name
and shaking window like you have
Anyway guess what I had to re install the OS again with clean install there was no way out of it i did fiddle for many HRS without any results
When i rung back the original owner he said he never had a user name of course hi was lying
Anyway in my case it was a Godsent as i have all fresh now took abot 1 HRS all up with all my info ,pass word and id as well now i got it written in my book for the future
So ther bottom line i think is you may need to do the same and keep record of it
Hope this will cheer you up
Regards
Peter

It's hard to see what your saying, so I gave a solution whatever your problem might be.

It always asks for a username when entering a password, it just fills it in for you with your own username. If your username does not work, then you are not the admin user.

If you are logged in, it will simply tell your username by clicking on the apple in the top left corner of the screen and next to "log out" there will be your username.

(If your trying to reinstall)
I don't see why you need to have a username or password when archive and installing. As it will not ask for it.
All you have to do is hold "c" down with the CD in the drive while you boot up and it will start running the set up.

(if your system is messed up and you can't get to see what the username is)
If it still is possible to start up Mac OS X. I would start it up and then of course it would tell you the username. Either by giving you the menu of all usernames to log into or it'll log in automatically and you can tell by clicking the apple at the top left of the screen and the menu will drop down and next to "log out" it will tell you the username (assuming that, that is the admin account. If not, your stuck).

If you can't boot up then put your mac into target disk mode by holding down the "t" while starting up. Then plug a firewire cable into your mac and then another mac. It will show up as a hard drive on the other mac. Go into the drive and you will see a folder named "users", open that and it will give you a list of all the users, find yours.
