Formatting my iBook today...need advice.

Hello all.

I have decided to format my iBook today. Currently backing all my personal stuff up; so I thought I would pick your brains.

The iBook has a 15gb hard drive.

Here's what I'm thinking about doing:
*10gb Mac
*5gb Linux (Mandrake 8 PPC)

However, I want to test some speed/performance stuff, so on the mac partition, I'm going to install OS 9 first and run it a few days. OS X, while lovely and quite nice, is slow at times, and that irks me greatly.
After a few days, maybe a week, I'll throw OS X back on and compare.

So, I guess what I need to know is: what partition schema should I go with for optimal performance?

Should I just go ahead and install 9/X at the same time?
*5gb = OS 9
*5gb = OS X
*5gb = Linux

If I do that, i can just bounce back and forth by choosing my startup disk...as I type this, that makes more sense. Hmmm...

Anyway, any ideas, tips or suggestions before I begin?

Nope, there are other flavors of linux that work on PowerPC chips, and Mandrake is one of them. Actually, Mandrake is made for a number of chips. It's on their web site.

Only problem is, if you want linux on your Mac, you HAVE to partition your drive. Linux is mean and won't exist on the same partition as Mac OS. That's MY gripe.

pipebomb, if I were you, I'd do the 10/5 partitioning. Keep OS 9 and X on the same partition. Makes things less complicated. Unless you're one of those people who INSISTS on keeping 9 and X separate... I'm not quite sure of the reasoning behind it. 9 and X are fine with me on the same disk.

I feel your pain there Scott...I think every portable user would love an extra 5 gigs, including myself
