The reason was to help build community and not spread everyone out so thin. I realize not everyone may agree, but those changes have been made and can not be reversed.

Sure they can, you just have to go through and manually move everything back.

Okay, so the forums with hyphens in front of them have been merged into the forums above them that don't have the hyphen? Cool, some people were complaining about that.
