Free Printers & Converting the Masses

Well,

It has taken years, but slowly my family is converting to Mac's. Both set of grandparents are now Mac users. My mother is soon to be a Mac user. My in-laws are now proud owners of a 17" Flatpanel iMac that kicks butt.

Anyhow, speaking of the 17" flatpanel.

He just got it the other day. He ordered it the day they announced it. Apparently Apple claimed that it got caught up somewhere in a damaged shipping facility overseas. To express their sorrow, Apple sent him a free inkjet printer and credited back his overnight shipping charges, around $52 or so.

Not bad.

just curious, did your in law ask apple to do something or did they just volunteer?

i ask, because i think more people would get some sort of compensation like that if they would only ask for it. i know i have stopped doing business with a few companies that wouldn't give me any thing for my troubles, but most will if you just ask.

a bit off subject, but it illustrates the point - earlier in the year we had our kitchen cabinets resurfaced. they screwed up our order and stained them several shades darker than they were supposed to be. My significan tother spoke to the salesman and basically just said she was upset but would live with it. i called back and talked to the salesman's boss and asked him to throw in some extra work that we had been considering for free. he agreed and we were all happy. but i had to ask and i had to ask someone authorized to make the decision. most supervisors will gladly make you happy while most people you deal with during intial contact are afraid of taking the blame.

ok, i'm done. so did apple make the gesture or did he ask? ;)

Sorry to go off-topic, but I have a story too. When I bought my car they said they would be able to transfer my license plate #. It wasn't a vanity plate but it had my initials (by chance) and because my wife and I got registered the cars at the same time they were in order. Something like xxx-5145 and xxx-5146 (not the actual numbers).

When they couldn't transfer the number I told them I wanted a free oil change for my loss. They did it.

Depending on the state/country you should have gotten those plates transfered over. Me thinks the guy wanted to do more paper work and get more money out of you for straight registration rather than transfer.

Back to the topic, most companies will give you something out of consideration for your troubles.

I ordered an item next day from Amazon and it took them 3 days. I asked for something for my trouble, and didn't get nothing but 'I'm sorry, have a nice day'. No refund on my cost or anything.

I haven't ordered from them since.

i ordered my g4 right before they changed models (733 to 800 i believe) they kept giving me the run around telling me that i couldnt get the new 800 one because it was not comparible (it was actually cheaper in price, i hadnt recieved the g4 yet) so i had to talk to a higher up (which 3 sales/support people wouldnt let me talk to before) and talked to this manager, i explained to him that i ordered like 3 days before the announcements were made, and that i would like to upgrade my order at the current price, and he actually went with it, threw in extra ram, 20gb extra hd, and something else i forget...

basically sales people are assholes, the managers seem to be pretty good :)

Since we hadn't recieved our shipment yet - we simply cancled the order...

But then again we ordered online and it was from one type of machine (Xserve) for another (Dual Optical DDR Tower) via their online store.

Online shopping takes away so much presure from the blasted sales people (altho I haven't had a problem with Apple Sales people) - and gives you enough time to think about it (or for a new/better product to come out). heh :D

Yeah, you would think so. The problem was that my wife owned the last car and I owned the new one. I had to own the new one because I had a ford credit card that gave me $1500 off. If the car wasn't in my name, I couldn't use the discount.

Given that the owners changed on the car, I couldn't transfer the plate. I didn't pay extra for the new registration either. :)

PS Sorry I sidetracked the thread.

I guess I am fortunate is some ways because of my system integration work with Apple. I always get freebies because the guys up there likes to make me happy for I am such a brat at times and whine so much when Jaguar comes out and I will go "Aww... I have to pay for that after all the systems I have put together for Apple? Look at the amount of Macs I have bought from you guys... come on..."

Ha ha ha... and the brat wins... ha ha ha... the management level people want to "save face" and show that they are in control and have the power, so most of the time they want to throw in freebies to keep you happy and keep coming back to support the company. Just like loyalty programmes with airlines too...

Gee, I hate flying.
