Anyone have any experience running NetBSD on a 68K mac? I'm thinking about trying to get it to run on an LCII that's been in my basement a while. Do you suppose it would be capable of running MySQL?

You could probably get something running on an LC II, even though it would be slower than molasses in winter. I wouldn't recommend using an LC for a web server or something similar, though, if that's your intent, for the above reason.

I ran NetBSD on a MacII ci , with Web, Mail,AppleShare and FTP-server , worked perfectly. I had 546 days uptime when I shut it down myself. The only problem was the loud fan sound.
I had no X11 installed, that would probably be to slow, but running via Telnet it was ok.

I as unaware you could do this. I have been looking for a solution for something to do with an old Powerbook 1400 thats just gathering dust. Would NetBSD work on a 1400 AND allow the PCMCIA ethernet card to work (thats the killer with Linux).

http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/mac68k/ lists the supported models. I used a Quadra 840AV. You get them very cheap and they can serve with up to 128MB Ram a database. Also the FAQ there will answer lots of your questions plus the mailing list which I would not write to. These guys are long-time experts on that field on one should consider the list archives before asking a standard question. I definetely think, you are to start with the link above. It willl explain a lot. And get yourself a Quadra!! :)

bluehz... about your PowerBook 1400... unlike the other aforementioned Macs... the mac II, the Quadra.... your PowerBook actually has a PowerPC chip, not a 68k chip. You have many more options in terms of unix and linux variants. Check out http://www.linuxiso.org and look for OSes that will run on PowerPC
