freeze/buzzing in itunes w/ ext. drive

Greetings,

Thanks in advance for your help. Here's my question: We have an external H.Drive that's loaded with mp4 video files for the kids. This is connected to a PPC Mac Mini and the movies are referenced with alias files dropped into the iTunes library.

For over a year, this setup worked fine. Suddenly, however, during video playback of about 5 or so seconds, we get a frozen screen plus a loud buzzing as if someone has just kicked the audio plug out of a large speaker. The buzzing, in case this is important, is actually coming from the TV (I can raise and lower the volume)... so it's something related to the file sound getting stuck and not coming from inside the computer or drive.

The rest of the computer continues to function normally.

The one other thing is that the external drive has started behaving strangely. It disappears or can't be unmounted from the Mini. However, once I get it off, I can connect it to my MB Pro no problem.

I have run DiskWarrior on it and the program did find some errors. File overlaps, etc. But DW fixed it and I figured that must have been the problem.

Yet, when I plugged it all in again and rebooted... we got the same problem. The video froze about five secs. in and we were back at the drawing board.

Any ideas? Please help!

JF

P.S. I'm running OS X 10.5.6 on the machine in question. It has 1GB RAM and is a 1.42 ghz. I'm on the brink of going out to buy a new hard drive... kinda hard to explain to the four-year old why the computer with Nemo and Spongebob on it aren't working!
