I use my macbook about 4 to 7 times differently a day at the moment I don't have a battery that holds a good charge so I use straight power supply. Is it bad for the mac to be shut off and on this many times a day ?

The computer's on/off switch has a finite lifetime. The switch's lifetime is measured as the total number of presses, not by the frequency of presses per day.

There is also the fact that each and every time you power up there is an inrush of current which can spike on the high side before regulation takes over.
This will shorten the life of any electrical component and is why most electronics fail when being turned on. eg: (electric light bulbs).

You'd be well advised to limit your power ons to once a day and sleep your MacBook for the in between periods.

Though, I have been told that if you are MOVING the MB, best to power down rather than move it asleep. And when I write "moving" I mean packing it up, strapping it on, and then leaping off that cliff. . . . :)

Also, I assume you are properly shutting down the computer.
