Frustrated! Problems with VLC (slowdowns and choppyness)

I posted this at another forum too, but I need quick help so I hope noone will mind me posting here too :)

I have had my Mac for little over a week now. I bought it thinking I could do everything I could do on my PC. I had heard good things about VLC so movie playback didn't seem to be a problem.
I'm very disappointed in VLC and other movie players on the Mac. VLC is the only program I've found that plays SVCD, but both it's VCD and SVCD playback blows chunks IMHO. I mean, after about 10 minutes of watching either a VCD or an SVCD, it will slow down, and the sound will come before the picture, or the other way around. This always happens, so it's impossible to watch an entire movie, or even an episode of a tv series. All movies also play very choppy compared to Windows players, and even Linux players.
I have a 700mhz eMac with 256mb's of RAM, and in my mind, this should be more than enough to watch a VCD.
The quality isn't that great either. The QT engine makes the movies look very grainy and blurry in comparison to Windows players

Movie watching is such an important part of my computer use, so if there's no way to get better playback in VLC, I'll be forced to actually sell the Mac and buy a PC instead (I'm just 17 so I can't afford to buy a PC in addition to the Mac). I'm really frustrated, and I hope someone can help me.

Mac developers are usually quite responsive. In any case it's got nothing to do with the Mac per se. It's simply a bug in VLC.
