FTP stopped working since 10.1.2 upgrade

I use FTP on a daily basis to transfer files between my mac and a Windoze PC over LAN. Since upgrading to 10.1.2 it does not work???

Have checked all over but haven't been able to find anything to help. I have checked the kbase at apple.com and tryed re-installing the BSD subsystem, no good.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Did you install a different FTP server than the one included with OSX, or just use the default? Are other FTP servers working?

It's the default FTP server. Also, nothing is showing up in the logs since the upgrade to 10.1.2.

I have tried re-installing the upgrade this morning - still not working.

Here is the error message I get when trying to access FTP from the terminal.

"421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection"

Is there any possibility that any firewall software you may have installed isn't allowing access to port 23?

Can you ping each machine - or can they not communicate at all?

When you turn on FTP, can you FTP to yourself on the same machine?

Sorry for all the questions - it is the way for head-scratchin' troubleshootin'. :)

No firewall software installed.

Apache works fine.

Ping from WIndoze = OK

Cannot FTP from same machine or another.

It's as if FTP server no longer exists. Hey, how can I check this? (excuse my ignorance).

I've got the same problem on my family's snow iMac 500mhz. Although apache is not working either. I've heard of problems upgrading over the existing install. So when I upgraded my 400mhz G4 AGP I erased the harddrives and completely reinstalled everything from scratch and then upgraded. In the case of my G4 all worked well after the upgrade. I assume there are problems with upgrading over the used copy of OS X

You could be on to something there with the /etc/inetd.conf

Around the same time as upgading to 10.1.2 I also tried Installing Postfix and imapd on MacOSX using the Stepwise article. But I must have made a mistake editing the inetd.conf file.

It is a bit hard to tell now though, because I have spent the last two days backing up my system and doing a new install of the system and the updates. This sounds just like my experiences with windoze over the years..............

It's all working now, and in the process I have found an extra 500MB of hard drive :) :)

This whole experience has lead me onto the one major thing I don't like about the OS. If you are trying to setup unix programs (as a newbie like me), things can get messy.

But you know what I say, "If it aint borke, then it will be soon :) "

Thanks for all the help, it's good to know whay these things have happened. Hopefully it will save someone else all the hassles. Maybe.....

I have had something similar - my ftp works OK but my apache did not work after going to 10.1.2. I installed a new version over the top of 10.0. Before then it all working swimmingly.:(

I am not that bothered because I don't really use apache on my iBook, and the ftp worked which I use quite often.

There may be something going wrong when installing over the top of an existing version.

Roger.

thanks for the link - I'll check it out. I have a bit more time on my hands now because my Cablemodem just died on me. :(

I've got the /etc/inetd.conf with the # missing in front of

ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/libexec/tcpd ftpd -l

I don't have full time access to the computer with this problem (an imac at home, I'm at school).

Thanks, I appreciate any more ideas. I'll have to try the httpd upgrade. I haven't tried that for the Apache part of my problem.
