This happened tonight:
I was at a friends house after our lighting for still photos class and we plug in his digital camera that we had in class to load the pictures into iPhoto. iPhoto pops open, imports the images, and we're done in less that a minute. We look at the images and we're pretty pleased with what came out. We start talking about digital cameras and digital video/editing for some reason. My friend's roommate says he wants to show us something he edited on his computer. We go into his room and watch what is a VERY basic edit. Some music, a few cross-dissolves, and some audio layering. Simple and to the point. After the viewing of his 90 second video I asked him how he got the footage onto his PC. He always complains about how his specially configured "Gateway Video PC" doesn't do anything right. He couldn't get it to import video for eight months nd paid almost $2,000 for it.
He then goes into his explanation of how he finally got the video into his computer. Mind you, this process takes him though four DIFFERENT programs and more than FIFTEEN steps. The entire process takes him a almost 45 minutes with all items factored in. And that's only for a short bit of footage.
I commented on how that seemed like a big pain and waste of time. "All of that is taken care of automatically, and in one step, on the Mac," I said. You only need to click one button in most cases," I told him.
"I know," he said and started to try and justify why his way wasn't really that bad. I left the room before he could. He knows he needs a Mac and actually tried to sell his POS PC but nobody took it (big surprise). he actually gets very jealous at how easy doing most anything on the Mac is. At least he's admitted his problem...now just getting him to buy a Mac and dump that Gateway is at hand.
I just couldn't believe how much of a chore getting his footage imported was. Multiple apps, 45 minutes for a few minutes of footage? And he was using VegasVideo for the kicker! (it came with his PC)...man is that a piece of crap. Sonic Foundry makes the WORST UI I've ever seen on any Windows app.
Well, I thought some people might enjoy this story.
