G3 All In One - Why didn't IT sell?

Somewhere... dunno though

It had the same specs as the iMac when it first came out, but this had more stuff... it wasn't as curvy... is that why it didn't sell as much as the iMac?

This mac was made for academic use. I think IT is more expensive 2 make. There is also the original MTVcomputer. It is the same Performa as on my avatar but it was painted in black and has an MTVlogo on it when you booted the machine. There were only made 500 of it and is was part of a contest for the MTVAWARDS. You must complete the sentence "Power is...". The winning answer in Belgium was "...knowing the sollution before the problem occurs.":) ;)

IIRC, this Mac was only available for schools in the beginning...at least that's how I read the "history" article...

yea, i've noticed herve is making some good serious contributions these days!!

keep up the good work herve - i know there is some very useful stuff in that brain of yours!!

Also, I do believe G3 all-in-one was discontinued shortly before or after the iMac was introduced, so it didn't have much time to sell itself, anyway. Might be interesting to see how rare these things are.

Note however, that the G3 all-in-one has TWO floppy drives, which I suppose makes up for the fact that the iMac didn't have one. ;-)

yes, there was a time when 2 floppies really came in handy. i ran a 2 floppy setup for about 10 years. notice istill have one. old habits die hard. not to mention all the old docs i need to access occasionally.

which reminds me, that's what I really miss about the PowerMacs: the ability to add a second internal, optical drive. As much as I appreciate my superdrive, when I was new to the Mac (my first Mac was already a PowerMac G4 450) I missed my two drive-solution from my PC. 1:1 CD-copying is something I still miss!
Though, I won't get another external drive just for that since my desktop is already full of three firewire drives.

Oh, one question, does anybody know a manufacturer who makes Firewire DVD-ROMs? I changed the region code on my superdrive for the fifth time, which means I am stuck at Region Code 1 (as I wanted it). When I want to rip Reg Code 2 DVDs (Europe), at the moment, I'm stuck. I get a iBook soon, but this still isn't a real option, because copying a DVD image over the ethernet isn't much fun.
So, is there an external drive I can set to RegCode 2 so I can rip what I want???

thanx for any info ;)

The All-in-One was one of Apple's best selling models of 1998 (just before the release of the iMac). The only problem was that you had to be in the education market in order to get one (for normal people that meant having a student ID and buying it at your college bookstore). The two removable media drives slots are actually for a zip and a floppy drive (not two floppies, see attached image below).

I personally love being able to copy CD's directly from one drive to another. Currently the only system I have a CD-R on is my Quadra 950 which also has a CD-ROM so I do it all the time. The floppy thing for me is not that different from how I deal with zips. If I have at least one system with a floppy/zip drive attached on my network, then every system has access to one.

Anybody care to explain me what the reason was to limit the G3 All-in-one to the educational market???

IIRC, the all-in-one was released during Amelio's reign of terror at Apple. They did a fair amount of stupid things during those days, and the all-in-one being made only for the edu market was just one of them. It's probably just as well; I don't think the world was quite ready for an all-in-one on the general market at that time. Even the original iMac, successful as it's been, took a little getting used to...

Just my $0.02...

Wasn't it a TV instead of a computer CRT? That alone is enough of a reason to kill it. Ever try to use a computer via a TV? Not fun.

No, it was a computer display (not TV)... I don't have the specs, but I think it maxed out at 1024x768x16. I could be wrong. Very iMac-ish, actually. Not a bad machine, just Apple didn't have a proper clue what to do with it at the time...

that's what you're talking about mindbend... Performa 520 (LC 520)

The limited edition Mac TV had a bit of an identity crisis. It came in a black LC 520-style case. (It is one of only a few Macs to have ever been black.) It came with a cable-ready TV tuner card, and included a CD-ROM drive. Only 10,000 Mac TVs were made before it was discontinued. However, Its TV-tuner card has become a popular option on many LCs and Performas.

It was introduced October 1993 and discontinued in early 1994.

Ummm, the G3 All-in-One had only ONE floppy for it. That extra slot is for a optional Zip. How do I know? I saw one at my old school and the left slot had the Zip logoon it.

Apple did a demo at my small high school once, and they brought an all-in-one G3 with them. It had this freaky curvy top with all these holes for ventilation, it lookes like it was taken from som weird sci-fi monster. The guys actually weren't directly from Apple, it was the ad company they used, with Apple shirts. The head guy would do a force-restart to restart even a non-frozen machine.

All of you are bragging how you've seen one at a school or seen it in a store or whatever, but I'm probably the only one here who actually has one. That's right, two doors down in my Dad's room lye's a fully operational G3 all in one.:D

My mom worked at my school and she bought it through the school because it was cheaper. It used to be mine, but we bought an iMac. I shared it with my Mom and the G3 just lied around for a year or two. Then we got an iBook, we shared that too. Then we got a newer iMac and the old iMac went to my little brother my Dad got the All In One G3 went to my dad, my Mom got the iBook and I got the newer iMac.

Anyway, that's a little off the topic. But I can answer questions about it if you want.
:)

Oh and by the way, the G3 All In One is HUGE!

Yeh, the all-in-one was too costly, too big and had *too many* features compared to the iMac  . Also, it wasn't marketed like the iMac. They didn't even sell it in norway... When the iMac was released, Apple had a full-page announcement in the local newspaper here. That has never happened before ;)
