G3 iMac Dead?!? help!

hi all:

we have a G3 iMac 400 that won't start up. it was working fine before last weekend when we went away and shut everything down. we hardly ever turn our systems off and upon returning, the iMac wouldn't start up. here are the symptoms:

1. push the power button, no chime
2. power button flashes
3. hard drive seems to whir-up, stop, whir, stop, whir... after a few whirs it gives up.

searching through the apple knowledge base, the only thing we could come up with was that it might be the "backup battery". we'll get a new one installed today. if its not that, what else could it be? i don't think we can boot from CD as it doesn't go into the post-chime boot sequence.

any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
scott

Well is the screen black or grey and wavy?

I have sometimes had the same thing. My hard disk was damaged and the screen was only black. When I put system cd (which came with the computer) the computer worked, but I couldn't do anything, because the computer claimed, that hard disk was locked. (only open windows)

So I had to buy a new hard disk...and it costed and a much, but now everything works!

btw. do you have soft windows (the windows emulator)? Because, I'm quite sure, that my problem was caused by that (I was using a windows program, when the computer freezed, after that the computer didn't restart). So I'd like to know if you have that program...
