G3 PowerMac won't boot to FW

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but, I am trying to boot to an external FW Drive from my PowerMac G3 (10.2.8/400MHz) and it doesn't see the external drive (Lacie 160GB FW).

The goal is to restore an installed Panther OS from the external FW drive, it works on my G3 iMac BUT NOT THE PowerMac.

Any ideas??

Interesting.

It was my understanding that only PowerMac G4+ could boot from firewire.

If the image is on the firewire drive you could:

Boot from the Mac OS install cd with the firewire drive attached.

Run Disk Utility from the installer menu, do the a restore.

Thanks for the post,

I will try the "T key" and see if it works, alternately maybe I do need the FW Firmware update....

I'll let you know what happens

thanks again

Well that still didn't work, i get a question mark in the folder that would be the target boot volume.

My target boot volume (Lacie FW HD) works fine on my iMac running 10.3.x. I can boot to the external drive flawlessly

I don't get it.....if there is a FW firmware update How can I find out what version that I am running now????

Correction: on AGP Macs and newer, the T key makes the Mac boot in Target mode to act as a FireWire drive. The alt key makes the computer enter the Boot Manager before boot to let the user select which drive to boot from, but on older machines like yours it only tells firmware to boot from the default device.

PowerMac G3s are not able to boot from a FireWire drive even with the latest firmware.

Yeah, that sucks.....

I wonder how i can spray this image onto my PowerMac that lives on my FW HD, does anyone have any ideas....??

need specific steps please....thanks

What's the plan exactly? If you need to copy the system over to the internal disk, you can use Carbon Copy Cloner for that.
