G4 can't get dial tone

Put my G4 running 10.1.5 in the closet for 6 mo. after I got a G5. G4 had no problem accessing the internet before I put it away- now it can't, even when I plug it directly into the DSL modem. Something I tried gave me an error msg that it had no dial tone. The G5 has no trouble connecting. Any ideas? If it's OS related I got Tiger ready to go, but it says I should update the firmware before installing- and I can't access the internet

Have you tried using another phone cable to make sure it'snot the cable? Also, how about trying different phone jacks in the house? Hopefully it's not a faulty modem port.

Thanks for the response.

Tried different CAT 5s, and it's not the modem, either- the G5 works fine, tried different ports as well. The G4 worked w/ the same DSL modem before I disconnected it- the G5 immediately connected, no prob. Got a wired router NetGear RP 614 v3 so I could set up the G4, the G5 connected immediately, configured itself, then when I set up the G4, it couldn't connect to the internet, and I got the same error msg when I disconnected the G5 and plugged the G4 directly into the modem.

Wha??? I thought you were talking about an analog modem since you said that you couldn't get a dial-tone. DSL modems don't use dial-tones.....it's a digital connection as opposed to the analog connection of a dial-up modem.

Now, for that G4 you're going to need to install the firmware update from OS 9, so do that before anything. The firmware update won't work from Classic mode. The Mac HAS to be booted up to Mac OS 9.

As for internet access on that G4 now that it's connected to a router along with the G5, you're going to have to configure the G4 to grab the IP using DHCP. If it's running 10.1.5, then you would have to go into System Preferences and select the Network pane. Set the Ethernet port to grab an IP address automatically (in other words, DHCP). Also make sure that you provide the DNS nameservers otherwise you won't be able to access sites using the URL since the G4 won't know how to resolve the URL to an external IP address (which is what the DNS nameservers do). Depending on where the Macs are receiving the IP from (router or modem), you might be able to tell the device that's providing the IP addresses to the Mac to also include the DNS nameserver information.

I have location: Automatic, and Ethernet set to DHCP

"Also make sure that you provide the DNS nameservers otherwise you won't be able to access sites using the URL since the G4 won't know how to resolve the URL to an external IP address (which is what the DNS nameservers do). The DNS servers field is blank, same as my G5- it says it's optional. Is the nameservers thing you're talking about something different? The Network Prefs on the G4 says it's IP was "provided by DHCP server"- how do I tell it to include the "DNS nameserver information"?

Thanks for taking an interest.

Well, the IP address is provided by the DHCP server, but the DNS also needs to be provided from that DHCP server to the clients. Otherwise, you won't be able to resolve web addresses. In other words, you won't be able to type "http://macosx.com." You'll have to type the IP address for macosx.com in the web browser in order to see the page if you don't add the DNS nameservers. However, if you tell the DHCP server to supply the DHCP clients with this nameserver information, you'll be able to resolve web names to their IP addresses.
