I have a g4 cube running osx but this problem happens even under os9. My internal modem consistently connected no faster than 33kbs to earthlink. I found a firmware update (which installed only under os9) that successfully updated the modem firmware and that got the modem to connect at 44kbs but the session does not complete. I get an error message that tells me to go back and check my modem settings. I also sometimes get an error message that says that I cannot complete my logon to the ppp server. If I go into the modem settings and change from the v90 modem to the v34, I can connect fine, but only at 28.8. I've logged on to the same earthlink account using my g5 Imac and a pc connected to the same phone line and consistently connect at 44kbs to 48kbs, so I know it isn't the phone line or service provider. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
