Hello,
I recently purchased a refurbished Mirror disk drive G4 with an apple cdrw/dvd r drive installed. It has a 40 gig hard drive with 768 RAM, and OS 10.5.4 installed. When I got it, pressing the eject button would allow me to open and close the drive, but the drive would not read any disk inserted. Nothing would show up on the desktop or show up on system profiler. No worries, as I wanted to change the drive anyway. I inserted my trusty Pioneer DVD 110D which has worked flawlessly for about 2 years. Still no cd or DVD would show up on the desktop. Looking at the system profiler and I would see, curiously enough, pioneer misspelled (from PIONEER to PIGNEER). It would show the drive as having no burning capacity at all. I wondered if something was screwy in the OS, so I tried upgrading the OS using the software updater from OS 10.5.4 t0 OS 10.5.8 That resulted in me no longer even being able to use the eject button to open and close the drive, and still nothing as far as the disk showing up on the desktop. I tried repairing permissions, nothing changed.
At this point I'm thinking it's a software issue, so I tried rebooting in OS 10.4.11. System profiler says the same thing, with Pioneer misspelled the same way. It still doesn't show up on the desktop. But under 10.4 it does eject when I hit the eject button. Progress, of a sort. I go to repair permissions again, using Disk Utility, and after I do I can see the disk in the disk utility screen. It says there is a disk there, it says how much is on the disk. but says it doesn't know what kind of media is in the drive. Of course, I'm not able to repair it. (even a cd rw disk) I have also tried zapping PRAM, to no avail.
I tried upgrading the firmware of the drive, but toward the end of the process it says it can't find a suitable drive. Same thing with Patchburn. At this point, I'm considering getting an external DVD burner, but as I put in a perfectly functional one, I'm not sure whether it would be a waste of money. I can't reinstall the OS, because I can't get a disk read in the machine. Besides, Changing OS did not help much anyway. I puzzled at what this could be. Any thoughts?
