My computer doesn't seem to know who it is or how to boot.
I have a G4, Mirrored Doors Drive, 1.25 Dual Processor PowerMac with OS X 10.4.11 installed. After installing security and Quicktime updates in February, force fed through Mac's Software-updates program while I was busy doing my work ( I now understand this is to be avoided), my computer has refused to Boot.
Finally I HAVE erased the hard drive, partitioned it into 2 volumes and reinstalled the system software using Target disk mode from a borrowed laptop(G4). After installing the OS (first on an archive and Install and now erase and install, I am able to boot the laptop using my G4 desktop's hard drive volume: "calm" I created.
But I am unable to "unplug" the firewire and make the G4 Desktop boot up on its own. (One time I was able to do this-but when I opened System preferences to select my start up disk- only the netboot option appeared. I did a search for the ROOT at that time- WHICH APPEARS TO BE MISSING!)
I cannot boot into safe mode. I cannot boot into single-user or -v mode, It stalls on "still searching for root device". I CAN open
into -f, but so far have been unable to input any functions that help. I have reset the pram and the vram and the nrams in every possible way including taking my computer apart. I have replaced the battery.
I cannot start up from a OS install CD or DVD inserted into the internal or an external optical drive. The only program that will run from the computers drive is the hardware test on the original OS CD. It tests out perfectly every time and runs best from an external SONY Optical Drive attached via firewire.
I am able to press the options key while starting up to select the mode I want to start up, but every time I do this and select my choice, after the grey apple and spin movie, I still end up with the forbidden sign.
I love my computer and use it for work everyday. I would buy a new one but this is a great computer and I do not have the money to replace it.
Thank you for your help.
