G4 printing through a network

I have a Powerbook G4 (running OS X 10.4.4) and I just got a new Canon MP830 (multifunction machine).

The good news is - if I connect the Canon to the Powerbook directly using the USB cable it works fine.

The bad news is - when I connect through my network, it prints really really small. In the network print scenario, the Canon is attached to a USB port on a Linux box.

Options:

1. How can I tell the Powerbook to enlarge everything going to that printer?

2. How can I tell the Powerbook to re-direct anything going to a particular USB port (i.e. where it knows how to print correctly) to go to my network?

3. Anyone have any idea what is going on?

Also, there are a few printers listed in the "Printer Browser" dialog box of the printer setup utility that are no longer valid. Any idea how to delete them?

Thanks in advance.

The standard USB driver is not going to cut it. You have to use a driver which is compatible with remote printing.

Thanks. I've never heard of such a thing. How does one get that special driver? What do I need to search for? Who supplies it?

Interestingly, the Windows machines on the network use their standard driver just fine.

Check the Canon website, there should be a page where you can search for drivers by printer, and if that driver exists, you should be able to find it there.

I'm not familiar with Linux, but I'm guessing that the translation between OS X and Linux is different than with Windows, which is probably part of the reason you're having a problem.

Does OS X see the printer under Rendevous/Bonjour?

Actually, we've taken Linux out of the picture - we have the same issue when using a print server.

OS X knows there's a printer there, it is requiring me to select the model from a dropdown list and my printer is not in the list.

I don't know what Rendezvous/Bonjour is.

Have you installed the drivers from the Canon website (or possibly a CD that came with the printer)? It sounds like this is the primary problem if OS X can't auto-detect what drivers to use.

You can look at
Their support page for your printer

After that, I'm not too sure. Do you have the printer connected to an external print server, which is in turn connected to the network? If not, how do you have the printer connected to the network? If you can be as specific as possible so I understand your situation better, I can probably help better.
