G5 1.6 Random Freeze

Hello,

I recently got hold of a G5 1.6 desktop, i immediately upgraded the ram with an extra gig, it seems to freeze up randomly after 5 minutes, 4 hours, a day, with no apparent pattern mainly when browsing and sometimes within photoshop, it doesn't matter if its safari, firefox or even opera it still locks up with no warning or message forcing me to hold down the power button and reboot. Ive tryed reformatting and rebuilding, i thought it might be the harddrive so i bought another, ive tried upgrading to tiger, pulling out the extra ram, putting the extra ram back in and pulling out the factory ram, ive run hardware tester, tech tools pro, it still freezes. Is it posible that both sets of ram are faulty, yet all hardware tests say there is nothing wrong, can anybody give me some pointers or have i just bought a large silver paper weight?

cheers

It's possible that both sets of RAM don't play nice with one another. Variations in timing between the old RAM and new RAM might be causing the crashes. Remember that OS X is VERY particular to RAM, so always stick with top brand names like Crucial, Corsair, Kingston, and others. Stay away from cheap, no-name RAM....you get what you pay for.

I know you said that you pulled the new RAM, but have you tried alternating the RAM? Have you tested it with only the new RAM and without the old one? One other thing you might want to do is reseat the old RAM once you've removed the new RAM if you're doing it that way.

Now I don't know exactly where it is on the G5 tower, but you can reset the PMU by pushing a little button that's located on the logic board. ONLY PUSH THIS BUTTON ONCE!! Once you've done that, close everything up and boot.

There was also at least one firmware update for one or more of the single-processor G5's. I'd suggest looking into that. The firmware update fixed crashing problems. I'm fuzzy about the details at this point.

That is a good point. I had to do this for my father's G5 which is the same model (should have realized that... :p).

Thanks for that tip dktrickey. :)

hello,

thanks for you help, i have tried running both sets of ram by themselves, also reseating them, the machines firware is current (PMG5UniFWU5.1.5f2), i will try finding that button.

cheers

hello,

i think i have tried everything now, new hardrive, new ram, new software, firmware up-to-date, reset pram/pmu, left side off in case of overheating but it still freezes up mainly when browsing, it doesn't matter which browser either, does anybody have any ideas or do i just bite the bullet and take it to apple?

cheers

Is it still under warranty? If so, contact Apple about it and they should be able to take care of it for you.

Hi, I have a 15inch aluminium powerbook G4. While on the internet, and while scrolling (or using page up/down) it has had the habit of freezing and the graphics on the screen become horizontal lines of what was the web page. It has done this since I bought it (ebay). I have installed addtional memory (crucial)and also done a clean install of tiger ( it had panther). But no changes. At a complete loss as to what is wrong and what to do. Can you help?

Hi, Gee I don't know if it's under warranty or not. I bought it on ebay some months ago. I guess I should probably check with them huh.

dmkerslake, you might want to post this as a new thread in the appropriate section. Posting your own problems in the same thread as someone else's is off-topic and only causes confusion, leading to unanswered questions.

As for my question about warranty, that was directed to the creator of the thread, matrix4767. There is no way I would have known what problem you're having since that answer from me was BEFORE you even posted your problem.

Post this as a new thread and you'll get more answers regarding your issue. :)
