G5 Powerbook with 90nm chip?

The Register (www.theregister.co.uk) is reporting that the new generation of G5 chips which are fabricated at 90nm instead of 130nm have a considerable reduction in power consumption. From the article:

"The 970FX, meanwhile, consumes a mere 12.3W at 1.4GHz, paving the way for PowerBook G5s. That figure is comparable to the 7.5W a 1GHz consumption of the G4-class Motorola MPC7447 that drives the current PowerBook G4s. The 970FX's SpeedStep-style PowerTune technology will help too."

So, not quite as cool as a G4, but getting there!

More like battery life will be shortened. And you will have some toasty privates if you used it on your lap :) Now Apple just has to create a new cooling system (perhaps water cooled?) to help this process. Great article.

Apple supposedly has some sort of liquid cooling system up their sleeves. I can't remember where I read it, but I've read it a couple times.

Yep, Cooligy... liquid actually on/in the chip or something... Developed by Cooligy with help from Apple and Intel I think (perhaps AMD as well). That was some months ago that this was announced, so hopefully they've taken a few steps closer to having it available.
