I started having this problem the first time I opened GB after 2 things had happened last week:
1. Downloaded and installed latest software update
2. Experienced a problem: could not burn data to CD - no volume was recognized or mounted. Researched on Apple forums, followed recommendation to run Repair Permissions on the HDD. Did that, it fixed the problem.
I don't know that either of these are involved in the problem I experienced afterward.
The day after the fixed CD burn, I went to finish a GarageBand project in progress. When I began to record I got some errors that I didn't document... they were messages about error codes (don't worry, I've documented it better now). I thought I'd just close the app and restart it. Big mistake. When I opened the project again, all the real instrument tracks were wiped out. I went into the .band package, Media folder, and the aiffs were all GONE. Lost some 12 hours of recording and mixing because I'd not yet backed this one up. :-((
I thought maybe it had something do do with the permissions repair. I looked at the permissions on the project folder, the .band package, and folders inside it. Permissions seem fine - I am admin and have R-W permissions.
Someone on Apple forums suggested it could be a hardware problem. Today I ran a full hardware diagnostic which reported no problems. After that, I decided to try reinstalling Garage Band. Here's my log of what happened:
Started a new project.
Recorded Real instrument track OK. Saved project - OK.
Checked inside the .band package. In Media folder there is a file "No Effects#01.aif" - as expected.
Created new Software Instrument Track - Rock Kit - Tried playing with Mac kbd. to keep my audio interface out of the picture for the moment. Sounds played OK.
Tried to record the software instrument track.
On record I received error:
Result code -43 (I have screenshots)
On closing dialog, track strted to record, but annother error occured:
" Error code -38 was returned by the audio driver"
I was using Mac's audio driver, not an external interface driver.
Track recorded while dialog displayed and I made screen capture. No sound because I didn't play anything.
Invoked "Revert to Saved". On confirming revert received Error:
Audio file No Effects#01.aif not found. (Fig. 3)
Clicked Search. Result: Audio file No Effects#01.aif not found!
Click Continue. GB opened. The sound data of the track is wiped out. Checked inside the .band package. In Media folder the file "No Effects#01.aif" is gone.
I really hope you can help. My CD project is dead in the water, but worse, I can't serve my voice-over and sound track clients, which is costing seriously. Any help MUCH appreciated!
