Getting a new HD...

I'm getting a bigger hard drive, but I'm confused on what to do. Here's my quandry...

I visited apple-history.com, which is my main source for computer specs. I looked up my iMac DV 400, and the site says that the HD interface is ATA-33. Now, when I visited pricewatch.com to find a nice, cheap HD, I found this one...

"40.0GB 5400RPM EIDE Ultra ATA DMA/33/66/1008.9ms 2mb Buffer Int. 3 Yrs Mfg Warr 5400rpm -OEM" The price is $69.

Will this work on my iMac DV? Am I getting a good deal?

I know it's faster, but I'd rather have the low noise that comes with a 5400 RPM drive. It should complement the convection cooling. ;)

Still, a 7200 drive makes all the difference. To me it felt like my machine (G4/400) was 50% faster. It isn't really much louder either (is it at all ?)
Just my 2 cents

Okay, then I'll get a 7200 RPM'er. Will this one work?

"40.0GB 7200RPM EIDE Ultra ATA DMA/33/66/100 8.9ms 2mb Buffer Int. 3 Yrs Mfg Warr 7200rpm -OEM"

It's a Samsung, $72... I'm on an ATA-33, remember.

Now, I'm assuming DMA/33/66/100 means that it would work with ATA-DMA, 33, 66, and 100 interfaces, correct? Just so that I don't have to ask you guys again :p

Yes, it will work. I have two 7200 rpm drives and there's no more noise than a 5400 rpm drive I have.

ok, i'm not using either of them as internals, but i have one 5400 and one 7200 external firewire drives. frnkly, i can't tell the difference between them except for very large transfers. i run aps from both with no problems. and the 7200 fan is very noticible at first. but after a week you don't really notice it anymore. However it provides a very small, but noticible to the touch, vibration.

not trying to make your mind up either way ricky, just giving you info you might want to have.:)

I ordered the 7200 RPM drive about an hour ago. My dad said that I'd have a noticable speed boost.

Thanks for your help, all. :)

Great. Ed, I replaced my internal 5400 with a 7200 and I assure you the difference is tremendous. I also use a 5400 via FireWire. Via FireWire there is hardly a difference but internally with paging and all it is quite noticeable...

thanks deka - that's good info to know. so apparently ricky made the right choice. He will be very glad to hear this as well.:)

That's good to hear. :) Thanks again for your help. I'll let you guys know how it all turns out.
