I use Ircle
X 3.1b16 but there are
a lot of other software as well. If macosx.com irc is enough for you, then try the forum software.
I've tried all the available IRC clients and haven't been thrilled overall, but here's the better out of the lot (bearing in mind that my mantra is 'free, free, free -- shareware was out of the running):
ircii for the command line.
JediKnight 2.0 is one of the best free IRC client for OS X (in terms of interface, features, etc.). It should get even better as it matures:
