got a new iPod for free...

solrac

Mac Ninja
I sent mines to Apple cuz the firewire signal was bad, and batteries drained like hell, even when it was OFF...

anyway, i got it back but no repairs were done! They just sent me a brand new one.

The back is perfectly mirrored with no scratches, and NO scratches on the screen. So much nicer......

Damn, I gotta take care of it this time around (cosmetically)... I should get a case. I'm keeping the plastic wrap on it for now lol...

cuz it's all new and shiny!!!!

anyway damn! It's STILL having firewire problems. God damn....

Now the iPod just disappears off the desktop at random times, and says OK to disconnect, with no error messages. iTunes doesn't lose the firewire icon.

sigh.......

When 2 iPods fail on the same Mac... ever wondered if you might have some issues with the Mac instead?

Hold on a second... you do know that those who have used 2.5" Firewire HDD on Powerbooks might have toasted the Logicboard?

There is this "unreleased news" on Firewire killing Logicboard.

So might want to trouble shoot all over again.

Want to post some specs on your mac here?

That's what I thought when the FIRST iPod failed. But then, all my other firewire devices worked fine, and the iPod screwed up no matter what firewire cable I used. Then the battery started draining even when the power was off, even after just one night. So... pretty clear that it was the iPod...

Now the second iPod is failing on firewire in a different way... read my 2nd post above.

I haven't heard anything like that. My powerbook is the G4 400 mhz. 1 GB of RAM. A Western Digital external firewire drive fried my macs firewire ports. I sent it in for repairs and all my firewire works fine once again. Just the iPod always disappears from the desktop... doesn't sound like a fried logic board to me. Either a faulty iPod, or a 10.2 problem?

arrghhh and now even more!
When listening to iPod with the headphones, I keep hearing clicks throughout every song!!! WTF????

CONGRATS! Now you have a reason to complain to Apple BIG TIME! maybe they will throw in the case that you needed for FREE! And maybe even give you a FREE UPGRADE with remote, and larger storage! Time to talk to someone in the higer postition at the Customer Service Dept and ask for something for the trouble.

You had to go back TWICE man!

Tell us what you get this time!

Yeah, good idea. Lets already gouge a struggling company. Might as well ask for a PowerMac Dual 1.25GHz and a 23" Cinema Display while you're at it. Lets see if we can't get Apple bleading out of every hole.

While I don't doubt they would probably compensate you in some way for your bad experience, is milking Apple unnecessarily really a wise decision?

news flash: apple isn't poor. they can certainly afford to provide someone with a working product. companies usually throw in extra stuff to keep the customer happy. good customer service is a great investment.
i wouldn't say apple is a struggling company with 5% market share.

Not to nitpick but this "5%" market share everyone is so fond
of stating that Apple has is BS. In reality it's closer to 3.1%.

Second, Apple just like everyone else is struggling in this bear market.
Their new hardware line up, or lack there of certainly reflects this
(no faster iBooks, PowerBooks, iMacs and eMacs). Apple is biding it's time,
waiting for a profitable opportunity to release new hardware.

Third, I don't think you understood my sarcasm. I never intended to say
Apple shouldn't provide a working product to it's customers, I only meant
to point out that "complaining BIG TIME" for a "FREE case or FREE UPGRADE
with remote, and larger storage" is probably not the most appropriate
thing to do if you truly wanted to support Apple.

Fourth, what does giving away stuff have to do with good customer service?
Of course they should fix or replace it but why on god's earth should he
receive an upgrade at Apple's expense. Mistakes happen. If everytime
Apple sent out a bum product only to replace it with an upgrade at their
own expense, we probably wouldn't have an Apple anymore.

Someone I know got a free powerbook upgrade, because apple screwed something up twice. I forget how it went exactly, but the guy was really convincing and determined on the phone, and finally made them agree to upgrade his G3 powerbook to a G4 Titanium!!!!

But I don't really care. I just want my iPod working like it has for the past 6 months!!!

sigh....

Sorry... I posted what I posted to merely make solrac feel better after getting two "lemon" iPod. Did not meant anything close to attempting to shut down Apple. Hope the aggression can back off a little yes? My apologies for being lame.

Getting two "lemons" in a row is not a nice feeling. Happened to me before and it sux eggs.

yeah but I only got one lemon, not two. The first one worked great for 6 months then maybe it broke, cuz I do physical activities with it like running, etc.

The one they sent me ... well maybe it's a lemon. I will have to contact them again I suppose...

RUNNING!?! That thing contains a harddisk! ha ha ha... OMG! You are seriously pushing it a little hard aren't you?

I am not very sure if I will even go running after a bus when the iPod's in my bag! :D

Good luck in getting the replacement for the iPod.

the hard disk is SEALED in the iPod, and it's supposed to be able to be an active thing. Like Apple was advertising bicyclists / runners / etc. with iPods.

I know they have added suspension/shock system to the iPod, but my experiences with HDD seems to point to the fact that they have platters in there that does not enjoy shocks. Well... maybe those used in iPods are hardier.

No idea how the actual internals of the iPod is, or what suspension system they use, but for me, portable HDD should still be handled with care... maybe that is why the shiny metallic back! Subconciously makes you want to take care of it! LOL...

solrac, for goodness sake get a casing for the THIRD iPod you are getting! :D

Good luck with the replacement!

...maybe you guys don't realize this but the iPod's HD spins down once 32 MB of songs have been loaded into it's RAM chip - the drive's heads park. This means that since the HD is not spinning, less battery power is used, and dropping/running with/etc. the iPod in that state is not nearly as damaging as dropping it while it's spinning because the magnetic heads won't do any damage (like I said, they're parked).
