Graphic tablet

OK, I've used one for a little while in school...I liked it. Now, I'm planning to buy one at home, which should I go for? Touch sensitive is a must, and I'd like it to be A4 size, yet I don't want it too expensive.

Anyone really know the market?

Wacom makes the absolute best. I personally have a Wacom Intuos 2 6x8 and I'm frankly very satisfied with it. If I recall correctly, it has 512 levels of pressure sensitivity.

Yes, the Wacoms are the best, and the Intuos 2 also has tilt sensitivity and plenty of potential for expansion with other pens, mouses, and airbrush-devices ... each of these ID's to the tablet uniquely allowing you to set up the software to switch properties for each one.

If you can afford a Wacom, grab one.

I grabbed a brand new Wacom Graphire II for $120 CDN at my local Apple retailer, and have since been totally satisfied. :p

A big Wacom board (as big as I want) cost $500...I have only half of that...

Gwailo, how big is yours?

i'm sorry, but what do people use them for? i'm a designer, and i've never had the need for one... many people have them-- do you guys draw with them?

I have 6 Wacom Intuos 2 12x12's sitting behind for some new MACs I need to setup. Everybody where I work uses one. Mainly for Photoshop. We have a department that just uses Photoshop and no other Application all day long. They seem to love them but I still can't get used to them.

I use a Wacom Graphire tablet as my main input device. It came with both a stylus and cordless mouse, but I never use the mouse. The stylus is a much more natural input method, in my opinion. I used to get hand cramping and the beginning symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome from cupping a mouse all day. Holding the stylus is a different angle and hand position altogether, preventing the bad habits that were leading to CTS in my case. Plus, I can type while still holding my input device between my thumb and forefinger (don't try that with a mouse).

I picked up the Graphire from MacMall as a refurbished unit for $59. Not a bad price at all, considering those listed benefits.

you can use it as a mouse? how? do you drag it on the tablet? that's pretty cool... now if there were only a right click ^_^. i feel like i'm missing out, i wish i could play with one before i made the plunge.

The Graphire tablets come with a cordless 2-button mouse with a scroll wheel. It's decent as far as mice go, but a bit bulky. Yes, it operates on the tablet--somewhat like using a mouse on a mousepad. I never use it as I find the stylus much more to my liking.

Another nice thing about the stylus is it has a rocker switch on the side that can have user-defined settings. I have the lower switch set for a double-click and the upper switch set for a control click, making the operation very effecient overall.

I can't imagine working WITHOUT my Intuos 2.

I am doing lots of 3D work recently in Maya and Cinema4D (blazingly fast render engine!!!) und when it comes to texturing on the life 3D model, there is nothing better than a graphics tablet!!!

I couldn't imagine working without one. Also, I couldn't imagine going back to creating spline curves with node-manipulation when I can simply draw the curve on a piece of paper, shove it under my tablet and redraw it with the pen.

Especially when you have to do "weathered" effects (I don't know if this is the correct english term) on 3D models, the pressure sensitive tip is a must.

At the Maya User meeting in Munich this year, Wacom introduced the Cintiq 19inch...man, that thing is SWEET!!!

btw: Wacom sells two kinde of mice. THe Graphire series comes with a three button mouse (two buttons plus wheel/button), the Intuos 2 comes with a 5 Button mouse.

boi, there is a right click on both the mouse and the stylus. and yes, the stylus works as a mouse too. it uses the drawing area as the screen area so you can pick it up and jump your cursor to a different place rather than dragging if you want.
