Gripe. Skipping mp3's

iBook G3 800Mhz 640MB Ram, and MP3's skip like mad.

What's up with that?

Yeah, I'm running all kinds of other programs as well, but dare I say it... this didn't happen in the other OS.

Is there something I can do to ensure that winamp, or whatever mp3player I use keeps priority or something?

I suppose you could try increasing the memory alotment of the MP3 player. This is done via the Get Info window.

Harvey,

You're running 10.2.x, right?

Are you using the iTunes from the 'Applications' folder?

_Don't_ use the iTunes from the 'Applications(Mac OS 9)' folder!

There are two versions of iTunes, one for OS X and one for OS 9. The OS 9 iTunes runs in Classic mode and it will skip left and right.

I can do some pretty intensive multitasking without iTunes skipping.

Doug

P.S. There is no way to increase the memory allotment for an OS X program. It's not necessary.

Thanks for the correction. I did Get Info on the Classic version of IE by mistake.

Microsoft Internet Explorer (or Exploiter, if you like that better. Whatever it is, I don't use it!)
Did you really not know that?

I think what dlloyd is saying is that he tested out his Get Info hypothesis on a random application (in this case, he found Internet Explorer). Seeing the memory allotment, um, thingy, he reasoned that you could use that same method on the OS X MP3 player program. Alas, he had used Get Info on the *Classic* version of Internet Explorer on his hard drive, thus getting a false impression on what was available for OS X apps.

dlloyds' assertion that he had checked the aforementioned Classic version of Internet Explorer confused toast, who thought that dlloyd checking Internet Explorer's Get Info came out of left field, considering that this thread concerns MP3 players.

*bows*

I'll be here all night, and tip your waitress!

dlloyd: Internet Exploiter. . . I like that. :)

shatfield1529: I laughed out loud after reading your clarification!

Doug

Thank you shatfield!
dktrickey: Internet Exploiter is something I picked up on this board. It is all over here ;)

Actually I am using Winamp for Mac. Maybe that's my problem?

iTunes is unfamiliar and scary to me. I guess I should figure out how to use it huh. Everyone here seems to like it!

I'll give that a try and let you know how it goes.

iTunes.. I hated it for a long time, cause it controls the way your mp3's on your hard drive. I know I can change that, but it seems the best way...

But after admitting to that and getting used with it, it's my choise of mp3 player on OS X.

When at work, I work with OS 9 and there I still prefer Soundjam...

iLove iTunes. Call me simple (stop it!) but I love the visualizations. The interface is about as intuitive as you can get.

I did have to change the program so that it showed genres alongside artist and album, however, and that switch seemed hard to find.

iTunes also imports music from a cd reaaaaaally easily. Totally cool.

If I moved a bunch of MP3's in from another location, how can I get iTunes to play nice with them?

It seems that just copying them over into the Music folder doesn't cut it... or am I just missing something?

I drag the files into the iTunes window. That should work for you. I thought there was a way to have iTunes search for .mp3s, but I can't find it.

Doug

I believe you can set which directory on the computer your MP3's are stored. It's under iTunes -> Preferences.

I've multitasked like MAD on my TiBook (playing two QuickTime movies simultaneously, playing MP3s on iTunes, compiled code in a transparent Terminal window) all without MP3s or QT movies skipping. I was using iTunes.
