Hanging Shutdowns

CCNA, CCDA
I just realized something disturbing: I don't think I've Ever, in over a year, been able to shutdown OS X without being forced into a hard reboot (holding down the power button). I AM able to Reboot without incident (usually, I think), but when I try to Shutdown, I'm eventually left hanging, usually with the beachball spinning in the upper left corner over a blue screen.

When this happens, I always run fsck -y. As far as I can recall, repairs are always made. I took note of those repairs today, which seem to be the same as the previous times:

Orphaned indirect node temp (a few of these)
Catalog hierarchy: Invalid directory item count
Volume information: Invalid file count.

Any idea what's going on? I will also appreciate it if someone would define the above errors for me.

Thanks.

Busted File System. Something went wrong either during or after your installation.

Backup and reformat your disc, then do a brand new clean install of OS X,

My Ghod! I would Really like to avoid going that extreme! Will I have problems with my system otherwise? Won't 10.2 fix the problem??

What I would do in this case is reboot from OS 9 (from a separate volume like a partition or CD) and run Disk Warrior, hands down the best tool for these kinds of problems. I find that nearly everytime OS X hard crashes (requiring a reboot) there is some filesystem corruption. The corruption is minor so it doesn't ruin the OS X installation, but small things like icons or last modified dates or directory errors build up. Disk First Aid from Apple in OS 9 may be enough but I prefer 3rd party tools. Disk First Aid in OS X is in my experience never enough, all it does is run fsck which does nothing really substantial when compared to DiskWarrior.

Drive 10 should do the trick. as would techtool pro. but i agree diskwarrior is the best. just avoid norton. using 3rd party repair utilities beats all that reformatting and reupdating in my mind.

you might also want to try unmounting any peripherals you have before shutting down. try closing programs manually as well. i found this helps in avoiding the shutdown problem you describe although i haven't encountered it since about 10.1.3 i think.
