ugh... i feel like an idiot writing this, because i know the answer already, but i won't be believed unless i get a "professional" opinion, and this forum is professional enough for me.

the situation is, girl is online, AIM, girl gets IM from someone, just making fun of her and being like, yeah i know where you live, your name is this and your address is this, whatever. nothing ultra-top secret.

the problem is, she's all upset, and wants to 'press charges.' i laughed. i told her there's nothing really you can do, this stuff happens, the conversation wasn't threatening in any way, it's not an identity theft concern, yet she wants to find out who did it and what she can do about it.

any comments, suggestions? i just want someone to say something so i can get her to calm down. thanks everyone...

cheers, to crazy, paranoid, ex-girlfriends... it took me forever to convince her that it wasn't me!

Funny thing about being in AIM (specially from an AOL account, if you have a profile), once someone knows that you are female... you are going to get people messing with you. This happened to my wife, and the thing that stopped it was not identifying herself as female. Just like Microsoft, AOL has so many cool features that turn out to be horror stories in the making. If this girl has a profile, have her delete it. A profile with no information usually gets no unwanted IMs.

As for what she can do about this person on the other end... not much. You can report encounters of that type to AOL, but like LTM and Nummi in this forum, they could just come back as someone else. One thing to note is that most males back down when confronted with another male on the other end of an IM, at least that has been my experience, but people say I tend to be aggressive and confrontational by nature (though I don't see it in myself). If you are there when it happens, just take over for her and imagine that you are bigger than the other guy (which is pretty easy for me being 5' 11" and 220 lb, there aren't many people I have come across that can physically intimidate me).

Giving out information on the internet (specially if you are young and/or female) is something that you should really not do. If you give out anything that can make you a target, you are going to be a target. I've been trying to teach that to some very slow members of this forum, but they just don't seem to get it.

Best of luck with your situation.

There are utilities for booting people. This could come in handy from time to time. If this continues I suggest you either work out a way to determine their IP, or simply call up AOL and talk to then about the account to see if you can find out who it is whether it is a stranger/friend.

Don't file online reports. AOL hardly takes them seriously. My friends use to file about 5 of them a day, just for fun, and nothing ever happened.

On the creative side: If you come up empty on everything, give the forum the screename and let us spam them into the 5th circle of hell.:D

hehe - thanks for the offer. Is there even a way to determine someone's IP using AIM? Also, i figured AOL wouldn't even care, due to the free and impersonal nature of AIM. Next time I talk to her, i'll try to get the screenname, you know, in case anyone in here needs something to do w/ their free time ;)

Dear Mr. RacerX,
I would appretiate that if, in the future, you would not refer to me and Nummi as these type of weird stalker people. We are not anywhere near the magnitude that you describe. I would kindly thank you for your cooperation with this. Thank you.

You guys were booted off the site because you were not welcome here and returned anyway. Sounds like a perfect example to me. :D

By the way, did your mommy and daddy give you permission to come back here?

You guys are also an example of someone who would be a good target... but you guys don't want to listen to me.
