Getting an external drive offers several advantages:
• You can get a lot more storage for a lot less money
• Your standard external drive is a 3.5" hard drive that spins at 7200 rpm, while your standard 2.5" laptop drive spins at 5200 rpm. Makes a big difference.
• You'll get more storage by adding as opposed to replacing
• You won't have to crack open your Powerbook (which for a first-timer can be very tense)

Recommendations for external storage: Firewire connection. USB 2.0 claims faster speeds, but proves to be less reliable.

Replacement batteries: Apple. I don't trust 3rd party Apple hardware.

Memory: Samsung ram is shipped with most of Apple's systems, so it never hurts to drop the extra few dollars on the stuff Apple uses. Crucial is also a good source. Avoid generic & value brands. Macs are picky about their RAM.
