Hard drive problem with SL and Canon printer

1) Have an external Seagate 1TB HD, partitioned into two .5 TBs drives.
2) A Canon Laser printer via USB 2; updated the most recent drivers.
3) Snow Leopard, up to date.
4) iMac, 24", Core 2 Duo, 2.16 GHz, 256 GB HD.

When the printer is connected, the two partitions will not unmount, cannot be verified using Disk Utilities nor SuperDuper. Force ejecting is the only option and I risk data damage.
When I disconnect the printer and mount the drives, they appear as normal and function normally. So I have to alternatively use either the external drive or the printer but not at the same time.
Anybody have this problem or know of a solution?
Thank you.

How is the external HD connected, usb, firewire? Can you try connecting through firewire if not already and does it make a difference? Otherwise try the usuals like zapping PRAM and an SMC reset.

No FireWire; connected via USB 2.
I should point out I have had this same problem since upgrading to SL on two OTHER hard drives one FireWire MyBook and the second a USB 2 MyBook after installing the Canon drivers. ALso, same issue when connecting to a MacBook Pro.
Thanks for the advise. It is a bit of a puzzler.
